Volunteers needed to teach digital skills

THE search is on once again to find digital champions across Warrington.
A campaign has been launched by Warrington Borough Council, Golden Gates Housing Trust (GGHT) and Warrington Voluntary Action to find a team of digital champions who can share their passion, skills and knowledge with people who need it.
The campaign has been developed in support of the Go ON initiative, which seeks to address the lack of digital skills across the UK.
At the moment, there are around 19,000 adults in Warrington who don’t have access to the internet or the basic skills they need to make the most of its benefits.
To become one of Warrington’s Digital Champions, all you need to do is volunteer five hours (or more) of your time to help a local resident complete a simple online toolkit that will teach them how to do the basics online, like using email or Facebook.
Working on your own or with another Digital Champion, you’ll help them work through the toolkit in a local community venue. It will be the Champion’s job to be there to answer any questions they may have and share their basic knowledge and skills, as well as their enthusiasm.
The council’s executive board member for personnel and communications, Cllr Hitesh Patel, said: “Digital Champions won’t need to be IT experts. They’ll need basic online skills and good communication skills, a passion for helping others to get online, and the patience to answer questions. And they’ll need to be able to commit to volunteering for a minimum of five hours between October and December 2014.
“Volunteering can be arranged around work, education or other commitments and full training and support will be provided as a Digital Champion. Digital Champions will acquire new skills, become a certified Go ON UK Digital Champion which will enhance CV’s, meet new people and best of all make a real difference to somebody’s life.”
Prospective digital champions are being asked to express an interest by contacting Warrington Voluntary Action on 01925 246880 or by logging on to http://www.warringtonva.org.uk/volunteering/volunteer-digital-champion.
