Nearly half of rape cases recorded as “no crime”

A REPORT published this week showed nearly half of rape cases were recorded as “no crime” by Cheshire Police.
Warrington North MP Helen Jones has called on Tory Police Commissioner John Dwyer to ask serious questions about his party’s approach to ensuring justice for victims of rape and domestic violence.
The report from Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary (HMIC) also revealed that many victims of domestic violence were not consulted on punishments given to offenders when the case did not reach court.
Ms Jones (pictured) said: “I’m outraged by this news and have stressed the need for urgent action.
“Victims need to feel confident that if they report sexual or domestic violence they will be taken seriously, and that the perpetrator will be brought to justice. For this to happen cases must be accurately recorded, more cases should be passed to the Crown Prosecution Service and victims must be given access to support services every step of the way.”
The Warrington North MP now says that Cheshire Police Commissioner, John Dwyer, (pictured below) needs to have a word in the ear of his Party colleagues in Westminster.
Before Parliament broke up for the summer Ms Jones asked the Government what steps it was taking to encourage rape victims to report the crime to the police and to ensure they received appropriate treatment when they did so.
Responding for the Government, Home Office Minister Norman Baker said giving victims more confidence to report crimes is “at the heart” of the Government’s approach.
Yet the situation in Cheshire strongly echoes the national picture. Earlier this year, the Labour Party revealed that whilst rape cases were increasing, there was a drop of 30% in the number of rape cases referred by the police to prosecution services.
Ms Jones added: “The Government’s failure to get a grip on sexual violence is having a profound impact on victims in Warrington and Cheshire. Mr Dwyer has an obligation to put pressure on his Party colleagues in Westminster to take tangible steps to increase justice for rape victims.”
