GRAPPENHALL got off to a fine start when Alderley Edge visited Broad Lane in the Vivio Cheshire County League premiership, reducing the visitors to 43-5.
Aussie paceman Josh McClelland took 3-64 as Grappers looked set to dismiss the visitors for an embarrassingly low score.
But then Alderley Edge fought back, with the later batsmen taking on the bowlers in great style. The visitors ended on a formidable 244-7 and Grappenhall were again left on the back foot.
The batsmen rallied, with skipper Richard Green leading with a fine 81 and James McCoy hitting 52. But they could not keep up with the run rate and finished on 195-5 to earn an honourable draw.
Eight points from the game kept Grappers in a mid-table position but they could do with at least one win from the remaining two fixtures to ensure premier division safety.
Grappenhall 2nd enjoyed a good win at Alderley Edge.
Batting first, they reached 185-7, Jamie Bye hitting 56 and Will Sharp 67 with Matt Titchard chipping in with a useful 32 not out.. Alderley Edge were bowled out for 120, Jack Critchley taking 4-27 and Bye returning to take 3-4.
Warrington’s match in division two was abandoned due to rain.
In the Cheshire Alliance, Glazebury ensured first division survival with a 26-run at basement club Ellesmere Port.
Glazebury batted first and made 128, Chris Lord top scoring with 37 and Tom Wilkinson hitting 31. Port were dismissed for 102, succumbing to the pace of Sam Stanier, 4-29 and Dave Acton 3-26.
Stretton lost at Port Sunlight after batting first and scoring 201-9. The home side cruised to 202-4.
At Stretton, the 2nd bowled out Stalybridge St Pauls for 98, S Ehmed taking 5-12 but then collapsed to 95 all out.
Appleton 2nd were dismissed for 60 at division three leaders Eastham and Bromborough Pool, who knocked off the runs for the loss of one wicket.
Appleton 3rd held Wilmslow to 88-8, Michael Ormson taking 3-40. A bright innings of 77 not out from Venshaka put Appleton well on the way to victory by eight wickets.
