New electoral register – the facts

0

RESIDENTS of Warrington should have received a letter about transferring to the new electoral register.
The letters were sent out last month – and the majority of people won’t have to do anything.
But 10 per cent have not been automatically transferred to the new electoral register and need to take action.
Anyone informed that they need to register on the new system can do it quickly and easily on the register to vote website at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote. Theyu can also register by
post by following the instructions on the letter.
This is the first time that people can register to vote online and if anyone not on the updated register might not be able to vote in future. This should appeal to many young people or students – so if they have just turned 18 or have not registered before, they need to get online to register to vote.
People who have recently moved house also need to register to vote at the
new address.
There are two versions of the electoral register, the full register and the open register.
The full register has the names and addresses of everyone who is registered to vote. Anyone can look at it by making an appointment at the town hall but it is only supplied for certain purposes such as law enforcement. Credit reference agencies are allowed to use this
version but only to verify your details.
The open register is available for general sale and can be used for any purpose. Anyone can choose not to appear on this version by indicating when they register or by emailing or ringing the elections team. This will not affect their voting rights or credit status.
Anyone who does not receive a letter can contact the elections team on 01925 442184 or email [email protected]
