TWO young reading activists from Warrington were chosen to attend a workshop at a national newspaper as a reward for their contribution as volunteers at Padgate Library and their interest in working in the media.
Jake Morris and Will Powner were chosen by LiveWire to attend the event at The Guardian head office in London.
They were joined by 30 other young reading activists from around the country and, working in pairs, hey prodeuced a front page of five articles jusing that day’s live news feed.
Reading Activists gain new skills and opportunities through reading activities in their local libraries and communities and the scheme encourages young people aged 11–24 to setup reading and writing groups, and help others through social action in their local communities.
Jake and Will said they had “a really top day” and enjoyed working on a real newspaper with real news.
Their articles included news of a Dr Who tour, which Will said made his day.
Chris Everett, development librarian for LiveWire said: “It is brilliant to be able to provide young people in Warrington with this sort of opportunity through the Reading Activists’ programme.
“At LiveWire we try to give all our young volunteers experiences to suit their interests and help with their future aspirations.”
