Give your car away – for charity

WARRINGTON’S Peace Centre has come up with a novel way of raising much needed funds – by asking people to give them a car!
The centre, set up in memory of Tim Parry and Johnathan Ball, victims of the IRA bombings in Warrington, has joined up with Giveacar, a non-profit social enterprise that collects unwanted and unused cars for charity.
Regardless of their condition, cars are collected free-of-charge nationwide by Giveacar then sold through an online auction or disposed of at an authorised treatment facility.
Profits from the sale will then be donated to the Peace Centre.
Even if the vehicle is scrapped, it will donate up to £250 for the charity, enough to run a full day’s activity for young people vulnerable to violence.
Even the oldest wrecks and “old bangers” can create a significant donation to the charity.
The Peace Centre’s Jonathan Levy said: “Many car owners want an easy and completely free way to get rid of their old car and at the same time want to do some good.
“Giveacar will help them to do this in a legal and environmentally friendly way and to make a donation to vital charity work to stop young people turning towards violent conflict and terrorism.”
The scheme helps discourage irresponsible disposal and abandonment of cars that impacts the local environment and also costs local taxpayers’ money to remove and dispose of them.
Patrick Church, manager of Giveacar, said: “We are thrilled to have partnered with the Tim Parry Johnathan Ball Foundation for Peace. We are always looking for ways to raise the number of old cars donated, as this can result in larger donations for worthy causes like the Peace Centre.
“Our service has always relied on the generosity of the public but can also help people get rid of unwanted cars that can be tricky to remove. The service has proved really popular and often surprises donors with the amount raised.
“We’ve managed to raise over £4,000 from single vehicle donations in the past.”
