Unsuitable movies bedsit house to go ahead – despite objections

A PLAN to adapt a house to accommodate up to 10 bedsit tenants has been given the go-ahead by planning chiefs at Warrington – despite opposition from neighbours concerned about a history of anti-social behaviour.
The borough council’s development management committee was told of an incident when “very unsuitable movies” were shown at the house in Longdin Street, Latchford in full view of children from a nearby school.
There were also allegations of a man from the house making inappropriate approaches to children in a nearby shop.
Numerous objections were lodged by nearby residents and also by the head teacher at Alderman Bolton Primary School.
But councillors were told the house had changed ownership and the new owner planned to completely refurbish the property to attract a different type of tenants – young professionals.
The committee was told the detached house had been used as a small boarding house as far back as 1970.
It was converted to six bedsits in 1990 and it was now intended to increase the number of bedsits to 10 and also convert an outbuilding to a kitchen.
Local councillors Hans Mundry and Steve Wright opposed the scheme but planning said the proposal involved the re-use of an existing building well placed in relation to public transport, shopping and community facilities.
The increase in the number of bedsits was not considered sufficient to significantly impact on the living conditions of nearby dwellings nor lead to an increase in anti-social activity
