Motorway closed after death crash

EMERGENCY services remain at the scene of a horrific crash on the M56 near Runcorn this morning – and motorists are still being advised to avoid the area.
The crash, which involved a heavy lorry, careering through the barriers on the Weaver Viaduct and plunging to an embankment below, has proved fatal.
Rescue workers managed to reach the wrecked vehicle only to find the driver had already died.
The western carriageway of the motorway was completely closed and although the third lane has subsequently been re-opened, police are still urging motorists to avoid the area.
It is hoped to get another lane open for the afternoon rush hour.

Police are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the collision, and not yet made contact with police, to ring Cheshire Police on the non emergency number 101.
The identity of the driver has not yet been revealed.
