Tenants given a chance to gain job qualifications

UP to 48 tenants at Warrington have been given a chance to gain valuable qualifications and work experience to support them in securing jobs.
Golden Gates Housing Trust (GGHT) teamed up with procurement experts Fusion 21 to offer the residents the opportunity.
As part of GGHT’s on-going commitment to help tenants who face barriers to employment, the “First steps to trade” programme offers a range of courses for free including Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH), Manual Handling, First Aid, Working at Heights and Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS).
The programme also includes a two week work placement with Keepmoat’s plumbing and window fitting teams on GGHT properties.
The programme is designed to address the skills and experience gap that would help people attain sustainable jobs. So far 11 residents have successfully completed the course and feedback has been excellent. Over the coming months there will be three more courses running to meet the target of 48.
After completing the course attendees are supported by the Trust’s Employment Initiatives Team in application skills, CV building and mock interviews to identify any areas of improvement, followed by a guaranteed job interview with GGHT or one of its partners.
There have already been two successful outcomes from the programme, with a local garage taking on one attendee, Paul Snape, as a mechanic, and James Hill, who secured a role at GGHT as a labourer.
James said: “The support I have had from GGHT has been brilliant. From day one I felt more motivated, the course was enjoyable and very informative. I have no doubt that I wouldn’t have got the job without all the support I have been given by GGHT.”
GGHT Employment Initiatives manager Tracey Walsh said: “We are very pleased to offer this programme to tenants. It really will boost attendee’s employability when they are looking for jobs.”
There is high demand for a place on the “1st Steps to Trade” programme and there are limited places available so anyone interested should get in touch as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.
Small or medium sized businesses who want to get involved should contact GGHT’s Positive Change initiative by visiting www.gght.org.uk/positivechange, calling 0800 25 26 27 and asking to speak to the Employment Team .
