Unsuitable movies shown at bedsit house

A PLAN to increase the number of bedsits in a detached house at Warrington from six to 10 is being opposed by local councillors worried about the level of anti-social behaviour in the area.
The head teacher of a nearby school has also lodged an objection to the proposal in Longdin Street, Latchford following an incident when “very unsuitable movies” were shown at the house in full view of children.
An application to change the use of the property from a six bed house of multiple occupation to a 10-bed house of multiple occupation is to be considered by the borough council’s development management committee.
The development would also involve conversion of an attached outbuilding to a kitchen.
Planning officers are recommending the scheme for approval but local councillors Hans Mundry and Steve Wright have lodge objections
Cllr Mundry said: “We have had a lot of problems with people living in this residence. Increasing the size could add to the problem in our community.”
Cllr Wright added: “There are real community concerns. The vicinity of a primary school and the SureStart centre are a major concern for us and our residents.”
The head teacher of Alderman Bolton Primary School has objected on parking and drainage grounds but also added: “We have previously called out the police for an incident at this house which involved very unsuitable movies being shown in full view of the children.”
A previous occupant of the house had also caused concern for the police through approaching children from the school inappropriately in a local shop.
“Although these have been isolated incidents, increasing the number of tenants could increase the number of incidents.”
Planning officers say the proposal involves the re-use of an existing building well placed in relation to public transport, shopping and community facilities.
The increase in the number of bedsits was not considered sufficient to significantly impact on the living conditions of nearby dwellings nor lead to an increase in anti-social activity
The property was run as a small boarding house as far back as 1970 and permission was granted for a change to six bedsits in 1990.
