Epic adventure for the holidays

LIBRARIES in Warrington are introducing children to an epic adventure that will keep them reading throughout the school summer holiday.
Mythical Maze is the Summer Reading Challenge and it aims to get children aged 4-11 into libraries to maintain their reading skills and confidence.
Youngsters can join the Mythical Maze challenge by popping into the local LiveWire library and signing up for free.
Once children have joined they will receive a poster to start them off and then each time they read two books, they will receive a set of stickers and other rewards to motivate them further.
A free Mythical Maze app is also available to download, that can be used to scan the character stickers to launch audio visual content including videos, games and messages from the mythical creatures on any smart phone or tablet.
Research shows the Summer Reading Challenge – now in its 15th year – increases children’s enjoyment of reading.
t builds confidence and independent reading, helping prevent the summer reading dip in children’s literacy levels that can occur during the long break from school.
Teachers often comment that children who take part return to school after the break as more fluent, confident readers.
Jo Unsworth, LiveWire’s assistant neighbourhood wellbeing manager for libraries and learning said: “This year’s challenge is even more exciting than ever, with fantastical creatures from myths and legends to really help encourage the children to take part.”
