Changes in the voting system

0

THE way residents register to vote has changed and letters are being sent out to Warrington residents to remind them of the changes.
In the past, one person was responsible for registering everyone who lived in a household. Now, residents will have to register themselves individually.
The new system is called Individual Electoral Registration (IER) and allows people to register online for the first time.
Warrington residents will receive a letter about IER between August 7 and August 17.
Residents are urged to look out for the letter as it will provide information on whether or not they need to take action to join the new register.
The council expects that the majority of residents will not have to do anything but it is expected that about 10 per cent of local residents will not automatically be transferred to the new electoral register.
It is free, quick and easy to register online at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote.
Residents will need to provide their name, address and nationality, their National Insurance number and their date of birth.
Further guidance is available from the Warrington Elections Helpline on 01925 442184 or email [email protected].
