WARRINGTON Borough Council is formally launching its four year programme to commemorate the centenary of the First World War today, Monday.
The Mayor, Cllr Ted Finnegan (pictured), will host an event at the Town Hall which will include the renaming of Committee Room 3 as the “World War
One Remembrance Room”.
The room will contain photographs and memorabilia from the First World War which have been provided by Culture Warrington. The council is also taking part in the national event, “Lights Out”, which will see buildings across the country turn off their lights for an hour in memory of the war on August 4.
Residents are invited to also take part in this and leave only one light or lit candle on in their homes between 10-11pm in a shared moment of reflection.
Warrington’s has already hosted a successful ”Proms in the Park” event with 75 Engineers Regiment which involved two military bands – the band of the Lancashire Artillery and the band of 4th Battalion The Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment.
Cllr Mike Hannon, deputy leader of the council, said: “The council’s armed forces and WW1 task group has established a four-year programme of events to commemorate the huge war effort and sacrifice which touched so many lives, not only in Warrington, but across the country. We had a fantastic start to the programme earlier this month with the Proms in the Park event, which we held with the local 75 Engineer Regiment, and now that has really got the ball rolling for many more moments and events.”
The Mayor said: “We are extremely proud of the strong links we share with our armed forces and we want the whole community to be part of this programme over the next four years. There will be something for everyone to get involved in so we can come together to reflect and remember the sacrifice so many people and families made for our country 100 years ago.”
