THE annual Peace Cup between Warrington Town and Crewe United from Northern Ireland is set to take place this Saturday, kick off 3pm.
Following the game at Cantilever Park the players from the Lisburn based club will be given a night to remember, thanks to a “gene-rous” donation of tickets from the Genesis tribute band “MaMa” for players from Crewe United to see the gig at the Parr Hall after the match.
Meanwhile representatives from Warrington Borough Council, Lisburn City Council and representatives of both clubs will be watching from behind the lines as part of the annual event aimed at continuing to build bridges and friendships in the 21st anniversary year of the IRA bombing of Warrington.
Crewe United were one of the first organisations to offer the hand of peace following the atrocity which was seen as a major turning point in peace process leading up to the Good Friday agreement. Crewe United will arrive in Warrington tomorrow, Friday and attend a special reception kindly sponsored by Village Hotel.
Deputy leaders of the council Cllr Mike Hannon said: “The peace cup is an important but also fun event that we all enjoy. As we are hosting Lisburn this year we wanted to make the most of the visit and link in with other events that are taking place this week and so we were delighted when Mama donated the tickets for their show – it will be a great night. I am looking forward to seeing who is the conqueror in the football match and welcoming our guests to our great town.”
Admission to the match which has been kindly sponsored by Golden Gates Housing, is £5 for £3 for concessions. Children under 16 are free.
