PRIME Minister David Cameron visited Warrington when he brought his

“Cameron Direct” roadshow to United Utilities HQ at Lingley Mere at

Great Sankey where he also met young apprentices.
After meeting some of the firm’s 40 apprentices the Prime Minister took centre stage in front of employees fielding a variety of questions.
Questions ranged from “What is it like having tea with the Queen?” to issues on immigration, student loans, the conflicts in the Ukraine and Gaza and “What job would you like if you were not Prime Minister?”
Mr Cameron opened his visit by praising United Utilities for their important role in the community, in particular providing 40 apprenticeship opportunities.
He said apprenticeship opportunities were helping create employment and improving the economy.
“We have come a long way in four years – but the job is still far from finished and a lot more work still needs to be done. But we are heading in the right direction.”
On tea with the Queen, he said spending an hour in the presence of Her Majesty was a huge honor and privilege , although no tea was drunk, or even anything stronger!
“I find spending an hour with her incredibly useful as she has seen 12 Prime Ministers during her reign. She has so much knowledge and has heard it all before. I think she is the most amazing public servant and a magnificent person.”
On the issue of immigration he said one of the problems was being caused by Britain’s growing economy, with many Europeans seeking work here. Controls were being put in place to tackle this.
He also stressed the importance of people having the basic skills in English and Maths to ensure they were capable of gaining employment.
On student loans he said they were important to ensure the burden of providing quality education did not fall on tax payers.
On another job he said he had enjoyed working for a media company prior to becoming a politician but he couldn’t imagine doing any other job.
Mr Cameron also used the opportunity to show his support for Warrington South MP David Mowat, with the constituency seen as one of the key marginals the Tories must win, if they are to win the 2015 General Election.
Both the Prime Minister and Mr Mowat also had the opportunity to speak to a group of apprentices (pictured left) who are benefiting from the scheme and discussed at length what the Government is planning to do to create a more skilled workforce. Since the Coalition took power in 2010 over 4000 apprenticeships have been created in Warrington South.
Mr Mowat said: “The success of apprenticeship schemes, such as the one at United Utilities, show that the Government’s long term economic plan to fix the nation’s finances and to get people into employment is working.
“These record levels of apprenticeships are fantastic news for our country, for Warrington, and most of all for the people whose lives are being transformed by the opportunities they offer.
