Streeets to close for Mela procession

A NUMBER of town centre streets will be closed to traffic at Warrington on Sunday, August 10 for the third annual Warrington Mela – a celebration of the town’s rich diversity of cultures.
Streets to be closed between 11am and 12.30pm are Sankey Street, from Winmarleigh Street to Arpley Street; Arpley Street, from Sankey Street to Hanover Street, Hanover Street, Winmarleigh Street, from Museum Street to Sankey Street, Palmyra Square South, from Winmarleigh Street to Springfield Street.
A procession will take place through the streets leading to Queens Gardens where the festival will take place.
The gardens will be a blaze of colour as dancers, singers and onllokers enjoy the fun. There will be Bollywood music and displays of the various cultures in the town.
Arranged by the Warrington Ethnic Communities Association (WECA), the event will bring people together from the various Asian communities, the Russian community and Polish and the Chinese communities among all others.
MELAs are traditionally an Asian celebration but WECA decided to break away from the norm and instead celebrate all the rich and diverse cultures of Warrington.
There will be Bhangra Dancing, Polish and Russian dancing, local singers and dancers, Tabla performance and Bollywood Music.
There will also be opportunities to sample local cuisine from around the world and plenty to keep the kids occupied with fairground rides, a bouncy castle and much more from 11am until 4pm.
The event has been organised by WECA with the help from partners including Culture Warrington, Warrington Borough Council, Golden Gates Housing Trust, Cheshire Police, Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service, Stronger Together and Warrington Voluntary Action.
