Riley hat-trick defeats Wolves

WARRINGTON Wolves were undone by one of their own as a Chris Riley hat-trick inspired Wakefield to a 40-26 victory at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.
Riley (pictured right) was given permission to play against his parent club for the Wildcats, where he has been on loan for the season, and it soon proved to be a bad decision by the Wolves, who suffered a second consecutive defeat.
It looked like it would be a routine win for Tony Smith’s men when they crossed within 30 seconds, Ben Currie scoring the game’s first try.
But Riley notched his first on eight minutes, and then added a second shortly after Danny Washbrook had also scored a try for the visitors.
Joel Monaghan’s converted try before half-time reduced arrears to 16-10 at the break.
The Wolves scored the first try of the second half too, through Rhys Evans, but again had to watch Riley cross the whitewash for his third try, stretching the Wildcats’ lead out to 22-14.
A lovely chip and collect from Stefan Ratchford then saw the Wolves’ fourth try, converted by Ratchford himself, and the deficit was chopped to two points once again.
But even the return of Richie Myler, following a spell out injured, failed to galvanise the hosts.
The tit-for-tat scoring continued as James Keinhorst and Ryan Atkins exchanged converted tries, but Wakefield crucially retained that two point advantage at 28-26.
And that gave them the confidence to finish the job, with tries from former Wolves full-back Richie Mathers and prop Nick Scruton in the last five minutes securing them a victory which keeps alive their faint hopes of reaching the play-offs.
