Council squandering £20,000 on 30 road signs, claims councillor

LABOUR-controlled Warrington Borough Council is “squandering” more than £20,000 on 20mph signs in roads where it is not possible to drive any faster, a councillor has claimed.
Liberal Democrat Cllr Brian Axcell (pictured) described the situation as “political correctness gone mad.”
He said the answer to a question put at a meeting of the borough council revealed that the council was spending more than £20,000 on 20mph signs at the entrance to 30 cul-de-sacs off Longwood Road and Pewterspear Green Road, Appleton, even though the layout and length of many of them prevented high speeds.
He said: “This is political correctness gone mad.
“At a time when roads and pavements need repairs, grass verges are not being cut and there is a proposal to close a local recycling centre, this is a scandalous waste of public money on unnecessary street clutter.
“In 23 years as a councillor I cannot remember a single complaint about speeding on these roads. I am, though, getting complaints all the time now about cuts in council services.”
