ORFORD student James Jones represented Scotland at the recent Under 19s 9s Rugby League Commonwealth Championship to herald the start of the Commonwealth Games.
James, 17, studies Carpentry and Joinery at Warrington Collegiate, as well as playing for Warrington Wolves academy, and was selected for the squad having been encouraged to attend the trials by college lecturer Steve McCormack, who is also the head coach of the Scotland national team.
He said: “It’s great to have been picked to represent Scotland because Rugby is my first love and my favourite sport. It’s really important to me as there’s a big family history of Rugby League in the family. My Dad and Grandad have both played for local teams, and we are all keen supporters of Warrington Wolves.
“This tournament was a great opportunity to play at elite level. I’m now focussed on continuing to develop my game and play for my home country. But first I want to finish my College course to qualify as a Site Joiner so that I’m prepared for the time when my playing career is over.”
The squad for the tournament was selected by coaches Dave Rotheram and John Duffy, himself a former Warrington and Scotland half-back.
Collegiate Rugby League Lecturer McCormack, who also coaches Under-19 players at Warrington Wolves added: “It’s a tremendous opportunity for us to work with the best young talent coming through the Scotland pathway. It makes sense that we should work closely with these lads and get to know their strengths and areas to improve because in 2017 some of these lads will be pushing for places in the World Cup squad. I know we’ve got some really exciting talent coming through both in the Super League Academy system and in the Scottish domestic game.”
