A FORMER criminal barrister turned businesswoman has been chosen by the Labour Party to contest the Culcheth, Glazebury and Croft seat in the Warrington Borough Council elections next May.
Cathy Mitchell (pictured), a mother of two, will stand in the election which will coincide with the General Election on May 7.
The last two elections in the ward have been won comfortably by Labour with Cllr Chris Vobe and Cllr Matt Smith returning the biggest majorities in the borough.
Cathy is married to Ceri and they have two daughters. She worked as a barrister, specialising in crime, family and civil work, also serving as a Crown Prosecutor before Chambers.
Outside of her professional life, she has a history of voluntary and charitable work, having donated her time to Citizens Advice Bureau to advise on issues ranging from debt to employment problems, as well as organising an array of events in support of the mental health charity Mind.
In 2012, her career changed direction and she set up her own business in Greater Manchester.
Cathy is also chairman of the local branch of the RSPCA, where she works with her fellow trustees to help cruelty cases. In her spare time, she enjoys music and horse riding.
She said: “It is a privilege to be chosen as the Labour Party candidate here in Culcheth, Glazebury and Croft. Over the past two years, people throughout the villages have seen the difference Labour has made, with hard-working councillors who speak out for the community at the Town Hall every week.
“Next May, I want to add my voice to Chris and Matt’s. Over the next 10 months, I’ll be out and about with my team, meeting local people and engaging with your priorities. In my working life, I’ve always strived to drive things forward and make things happen. That’s exactly the approach I’ll offer in Culcheth, Glazebury and Croft.”
In a joint statement, Cllrs Vobe and Smith said: “Cathy’s vast experience in business, in law and in the voluntary sector makes her the ideal choice to represent Culcheth, Glazebury and Croft at the Town Hall.
“She brings a skill set and a wealth of knowledge that will ensure the voices of the people she represents are heard.
“We are delighted to announce Cathy as our candidate for next May’s local elections and look forward to introducing her to residents throughout the villages in the coming weeks.”
