Grappers dodge the downpour – only to lose

ON a day when rain wiped out all other cricket involving Warrington clubs, Grappenhall travelled to the Wirral and managed to play – only to be defeated in a shortened game at lowly Neston.
Had they managed to win they would have gone top of the Vivio Cheshire County League premier division but as it was had to settle for fourth place. But with only 19 points separating the top five club, the last eight games of the season should prove interesting.
Neston chose to bat first and finished up with 158-9 – a target that was eminently gettable. Sam Guest ook 4-85 in a marathon session of 18 overs and off spinner Albert Pennington took 4-21
Grappers got off to a good start with openers Adam Roylance, 22 and Liam Parkinson putting on 41 for the first wicket. But quick wickets followed and the side slumped to 82-6. Pennington’s defiant 24 apart, the tail failed to wag and Grappers were all out for 120.
Grappenhall 3rd, who play on a Sunday, enjoyed a good five wicket victory over leaders Hyde at Broad Lane.
The visitors batted first and were held to 175-9, Josh Hayes taking 4-22. Grappers replied with 178-5, opener Iain Wright hammering a superb 107 and Arthur Pennington 24.
In common with other Warrington sides, Glazebury’s league games were cancelled to rain. But they managed to play a 40-over knock-out cup game on Sunday , defeating Stalybridge St Pauls by 75 runs.
Batting first, Glazebury hit 170-7, openers Dean Lord, 60 and Wayne Hargreaves, 40 building the foundation of the innings.
Stalybridge were bowled out for 95, Sam Stanier taking 5-13 and skipper Jack Warhurst 3-20.
