Support for dementia sufferers

SERVICES from across Warrington joined together at an event organised by the borough council to launch the town’s Dementia Action
Alliance – a multi-agency initiative focused on supporting individuals and their families dealing with dementia.
About 800,000 people in England have dementia and this number is set to double over the next 30 years.
The event provided networking opportunities, and showcased the support on offer from organisations across the town, including the council’s Social Care and Public Health teams, Warrington Community Living, Alzheimer’s Society, Warrington CCG and many more.
Cllr Pat Wright, the council’s lead member for health, wellbeing and adult services, said: “Dementia is one of the biggest health and social care challenges of our time. The figure is set to rise significantly and in Warrington is expected to be higher than the national average due to our predicted increase in the number of people aged over of 80 during
this period.
“The council is absolutely committed to raising awareness of the support that is out there for people with dementia and their families and carers. This fantastic event gave local organisations the chance to share information and it is really positive to see an increasing support network out there for people.
“Many of us will develop dementia or will care for a loved one with the condition at some point in our lives. It is important that those affected are able to recognise the symptoms early and be able to ask for help and support at the right time.”
Mandy Gough, Alzheimer’s Society services manager for Warrington, added: “It was fantastic to see so many different organisations coming together to launch Warrington’s Dementia Action Alliance. The event marks the start of the town’s journey to becoming dementia friendly, so that every person who receives a diagnosis can live well with dementia.”
