POLICE are thanking the public for their support during the Brazilian World Cup with just 15 incidents reported in Cheshire during the tournament
which ran from Sunday June 13 to Sunday July 13.
While the majority of people enjoy tournament?s such as this sensibly with their friends and family, the Constabulary has seen increases in crimes such as domestic abuse, anti-social behavior and drink driving during previous sporting events. So to tackle this, the force launched Operation Brazil.
The Operation, led by Chief Superintendent Sarah Boycott, was aimed at preventing World Cup related crime and disorder across the county and ensuring that the Constabulary was able to respond to any incidents that did occur.
Chief Superintendent Sarah Boycott said: “This operation was not just about putting extra officers on the streets during World Cup fixtures. We proactively targeted individuals who we know have been involved in football related crime and disorder, with the aim of preventing any offences before they occurred.
“This work included seizing passports from 35 people across the county who are subject to football banning orders due to their behavior at previous football events.
“Our officers liaised with over 360 licensed premises to work with licensees and inform them about the regulations in place during the tournament.
“We also targeted offenders with a known history of domestic violence and worked closely with other agencies, such as the independent domestic violence advocacy team, to ensure that support for victims was available when required.
“In addition to this we also had additional patrols on duty on key dates to provide reassurance to our communities and help prevent incidents from occurring.”
