Sick and disabled are being failed – MP

SICK and disabled people in Warrington are being left in desperate circumstances because because of the government’s failure to process applications for Personal Independence Payments, according to MP Helen Jones.
The Warrington North MP (pictured) says she has received many e-mails and letters from people in despair because they were still waiting for a medical assessment months after they had applied for the benefit.
She said: “Many of these people have worked all their lives and paid into the system. Yet when they are struck down by illness or an accident they can get no help because their medical assessments are not being done.
“It is appalling that such people, including those with terminal illnesses, are having to wait this long. The government needs to get a grip of this and act instead of adding to their suffering.”
Ms Jones said she was astonished that when she asked how many people in Warrington had been waiting more than six months or more than three months for a medical assessment, the minister responsible told her the information was not available.
Speaking in a debate in Parliament, the MP said: “The Government told me that the figures were not available. In other words, they are not only incompetent – they do not know how incompetent they are!”
