Residents oppose flood defence scheme

MORE than 20 residents have lodged objections to a new phase of the multi million £ flood defence project being carried out along the Mersey at Warrington by the Environment Agency.
They are objecting to a proposed temporary access road serving a proposed site compound off Kingsway North and the location and scale of a proposed earth embankment at the rear of Kingsway North.
Three other representations have been received from residents worried about noise nuisance, damage to property caused by vibrations and access being maintained for emergency services and refuse collection vehicles.
Ex-Mayor Cllr Peter Carey has also expressed concerns after being approached by residents of Kingsway North worried about road safety issues and the closeness of proposed mounding to their homes.
Phase one of the flood defence scheme, along Knutsford road between Black Bear Park and Bridgefoot has been completed.
Planning consent for Phases two and three was granted in 2012 and work is currently under way.
The new phase involves defences extending along the Mersey from Paddington Lock to Kingsway Allotments
Environment Agency chiefs say residents will be provided with a detailed schedule of work as soon as possible.
Consultation has already taken place and the line of the proposed earth embankment has been moved as far away from houses as practicable.
Planning officers are recommending the new proposals be approved. They say the work will provide much improved one in 100-year protection for property in the area for the foreseeable future.
