Council in the dark over swing bridge

PARISH councillors at Stockton Heath feel they have been left in the dark over proposals for the future operation of the London Road swing bridge over the Manchester Ship Canal when shipping increases
While they wish canal operators Peel Ports every success with their bold plans to increase canal traffic, they do not feel it should be at the expense of the people of Stockton Heath.
Peel and Warrington Borough Council have signed a Memorandum of Understanding designed to minimise road traffic disruption when canal shipping increases with Peel’s Atlantic Gateway initiative.
But parish councillors have not yet seen the Memorandum and fear that increased opening and closing of the swing bridge – and the others on Chester Road and Knutsford Road – could be disastrous to life in the village with traffic gridlock and increased pollution.
Members feel that the more successful Peel are with their ambitions the more often the bridges will become closed to road traffic.
They want any increased shipping to be at night.
The parish council has set up a working party to put together an action strategy.
They are also critical of the current unsightly condition of the London Road bridge and have asked Peel to provide a copy of their asset maintenance plan.
Councillors have also expressed concern about the proposed toll for the new Runcorn Bridge and the existing Silver Jubilee Bridge which will increase traffic congestion in Warrington and Stockton Heath. It was agreed Warrington should campaign against the toll charges
