WARRINGTON Borough Council is embarking on an ambitious programme to replace its aging street lighting and street lighting columns and replace them with modern energy saving equivalents.
Two thirds of the 27,000 lighting columns across the borough are to be replaced in a phased programme to be completed by the summer of 2017.
The scheme is part of an “Invest to Save” project funded from the capital programme.
The new lighting will be more energy and cost efficient using white light sources instead of the more traditional yellow or orange light in use across most of Warrington at present.
White light has been shown to make objects appear clearer and faces more recognisable.
A map showing the phasing of the project is available to view at www.warrington.gov.uk/streetlighting

Notices will be placed in the local area before work starts on individual streets. Once on site work periods will vary but at no time will there be an absence of street lighting provision and disruption while work is underway will be minimised.
The phasing of the replacement programme is based on a set criteria that includes the age and structural condition of the column, known defects, location and an assessment of potential energy savings.
Cllr Linda Dirir, the council’s lead member for Highways, said, “This is an exciting progression. Our lighting stock needs replacement as some is in a very poor condition.
“LED lights are more energy and cost efficient and provide a clearer kind of light which is similar to full moonlight. The new installations will include a remote monitoring system that will place Warrington at the forefront of technology”
