Council explains cuts in service

WARRINGTON Borough Council has published information about its street services and grass cutting which has seen cut backs from £2.1 million in 2011 to £1.4 million planned spend in 2014/15.
The publication and explanation follows a number of reports on warrington-worldwide in recent weeks, including concerns on litter bins in parks being left over flowing and claims of a North v South divide on grass cutting services reported yesterday.
Cllr Linda Dirir, (pictured) executive board member for highways, transportation and climate change, said:“We know that residents are now starting to notice the difference between the quality of service Warrington Borough Council has been proud to provide in recent years. The appearance of the borough is important to all of us and I would like to reassure residents that we will continue to provide the best possible service we can with the resources we have.
“Unfortunately, we have had to save £50 million from the council’s overall budget over the past three years as a result of Government budget cuts. While we have prioritised essential services and used innovative ways of saving money, that does not detract from the fact that we have had to reduce the funding to services like grass cutting and street services.
“We have published information so that residents who have concerns or ideas about how we can continue to ensure that Warrington continues to be an attractive place for residents, visitors and investors can find out the full facts and how we can work together to keep our borough clean and green.
“The types of new developments we have introduced include bulb planting on roundabouts and larger verges which will add colour and interest to the area but will reduce the need to cut it. The wildflowers project will continue bringing colour to grassed areas and increases wildlife. The recycling team have been delivering an environmental education programme in schools to discourage littering and encourage recycling.”
