Jobs that pay less than living wage

ALMOST 20 per cent of jobs in Warrington North pay less than the “Living Wage” according to MP Helen Jones.
She obtained the figures from the Office for National Statistics (NOS) after tabling a Parliamentary Question to the Cabinet Office.
She said: “One fifth of the jobs available in my constituency don’t pay people enough to live on. I know many people I meet who are working all the hours they can and still don’t earn enough to pay their bills.
“It’s disgraceful that the Tories have let down hard-working people in this way.
“People who work deserve a decent rate of pay and Labour plans would tackle in-work poverty and lift productivity without boosting the welfare bill. We have enterprise zones so why can’t we have living wage zones? They would ensure people get decent pay, employers get a more committed workforce and government saves money on credits.
“As Ed Miliband has said, 12 councils are now living wage employers and 17 further are in the pipeline. These councils are not only paying their staff the living wage, but also require the same of their contractors. “We want to extend this progress. Local councils should be mandated to approach larger private sector employers to help create living wage zones.
“It is in government’s interest to get private sector employers to pay the living wage.
“Councils could offer temporary rate subsidies or extra cash for training which can be paid for from savings to the Treasury through lower tax credit payouts. The evidence shows clearly that living wage employees are more productive and committed.
“The NOS figures make it clear that a large number of people in Warrington North would benefit from these policies. “
