Beware of council tax cold-callers scam

WARRINGTON Borough Council is issuing advice to residents about cold-callers making claims that people are owed rebates or can have their properties re-valued to a lower tax band.
The “cold callers” are phoning council taxpayers making the claims and charging big fees – when over-payments or re-branding issues can be dealt with for free by the council.
There is lots of information and do’s and don’ts on the council’s website at www.warrington.gov.uk/counciltax
Residents who feel that the council tax band on their home is wrong are encouraged to contact the Valuation Office Agency who can check this for free. Contact them on 03000 501 501.
They will also be asked to confirm that the details held about their home are correct. They will listen to views and if they agree that the band is wrong, will change it. Bands can occasionally go up as well as down.
Cllr Russ Bowden, (pictured right) executive board member for corporate resources and assignments, said:“Residents don’t need to pay these fees. If anyone is entitled to a refund, the council will pay it. And if anyone’s property does need to be revalued, this can be arranged by contacting the local Valuation Office Agency.
“We are urging residents to be vigilant and please report it if you are unsure about what information you are being given.
“To report incidents of bogus callers, call the police on the non-emergency number, 101, and please call Warrington Trading Standards on 08454 040506.”
