National role for school governor

A WARRINGTON school governor has been chosen for a national role, supporting chairmen of governors across the country to improve governance and school performance.
Liz Green, chairman of governors at Lymm’s Ravenbank Primary School, is one of only 54 governors to be appointed to the role of National Leader of Governance (NLG) in the latest recruitment round by the National College for Teaching and Leadership (NCTL).
Successful candidates were invited to attend a formal induction and training event for the role.
NLGs are highly effective chairmen of governors who use their skills and experience to support chairmen of governors in schools and academies for a variety of reasons.
The chairman may be new, governors may want to focus more on school improvement, or need support in dealing with significant strategic challenges – for example becoming a federation or converting to academy status.
NLGs will provide coaching and can support their counterparts in a range of different ways – for example in using data effectively to improve school performance or by providing more effective support and challenge for their head teacher.
Lesley Sweeney, head teacher at Ravenbank, said: “As this is only my second term in post, I am delighted to be working alongside a National Leader of Governance. Warrington has a strong established culture of sharing expertise and it is wonderful that Ravenbank can play a pivotal role in supporting other schools”
The role builds on the success of NCTL’s National Leaders of Education (NLE) programme where head teachers use their proven success as school leaders to provide additional leadership in struggling schools. In some cases NLGs may be partnered with an NLE.
The latest milestone brings the overall number of NLGs across the country to just over 300, rising to more than 500 by next April.
Charlie Taylor, chief executive of NCTL, said: “Governors play an essential role as leaders in our schools – they are the people who appoint head teachers and hold them to account.
“High-quality governance is vital for improving school performance and it is fantastic that chairmen of governors like Liz Green are willing to step up and look beyond their own school in order to help others who will benefit from their support.”
