Inspiring young scientists

KEY nuclear organisations Sellafield Ltd and The National Nuclear Laboratory are hoping to inspire a new generation of talent – in Warrington.
The Amazed by Science festival is running at Orford Park until Friday and includes a range of interactive displays, such as a glove-box and a remote handling machine, allowing children to try their hand at being a nuclear worker.
The activities have been designed to inspire and excite young people about the opportunities available to them in careers relating to science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) subjects.
Sellafield Ltd are keen to encourage more young people, particularly females, to pursue careers in science, technology engineering and maths – and with 1,500 employees based in Warrington they look to attract new talent from the area.
Pauline Deans from Sellafield Ltd said: “We have over 100 STEM ambassadors based at our offices in Warrington, who support local schools and events, to encourage more young people to consider science and engineering as a future career.
“Young people will be able to try out our interactive activities and speak to our apprentices and graduates about working for Sellafield Ltd.”
The National Nuclear Laboratory, who employ around 200 people at their Birchwood Park offices, will also be encouraging families to have some hands-on fun and enjoy stand-back demonstrations using their robot simulator and several scientific games at venues across Cheshire and Warrington including Warrington Library and the Catalyst Science Discovery Centre in Widnes.
Adrian Bull of The National Nuclear Laboratory said: “Our staff will be meeting people across the borough doing hands on experiments to help young people understand some basic scientific concepts. It’s learning but great fun too.”
The Amazed By Science festival programme includes more than 500 events across 55 venues throughout Cheshire and Warrington.
Venues such as Warrington Library, Orford Park and several local hotels will be opening their doors to future young scientists throughout the festival.
Activities include a “Bouncing Bugs” event at Warrington Museum and Gallery where visitors can make their own wonderful bouncing bug and take it into the new gallery to find out more about butterflies and moths; and badge-making and soldering events at The Park Royal and The Village hotels in Warrington.
Other venues included in the event programme include Jodrell Bank, Daresbury Science Park, Delamere Forest, Chester Zoo, Macclesfield Silk Museum, Chester Cathedral, Reaseheath Agricultural College, Tatton Park and the Hack Green Nuclear Bunker.
