LABOUR strengthened their control on Warrington Borough

Council making two over all gains, winning two seats off the Lib Dems

and one off the Tories, but losing out to the Lib Dems at Westbrook although they saw their share of the vote drop by more than 13 per cent – with UKIP taking nearly 15 per cent of votes cast, coming runners up in nine wards..
Labour, now with a majority of 27, made their gains from the Lib Dems in Great Sankey North and Latchford West and from the Tories at Culcheth, Croft and Glazebury. But the Lib Dems took Westbrook off Labour.
The count took place at Birchwood Leisure Centre.
Although they didn’t win any seats the United Kingdom Independence Party (UKIP), came runners up in nine of the 14 seats they contested!
Despite making two over all gains Labour’s percentage of the vote went down from 54.4 per cent in 2012 to 41.2 per cent.
The Lib Dems saw a slight decrease from 19.9 per cent to 19.6 per cent with the Tories seeing their vote share go down from 22 per cent to 21.3 per cent.
Meanwhile the UKIP swing went from 1.4 per cent in 2012 to 14.9 per cent, picking up large numbers of votes in inner areas of the town at Fairfield & Howley, Latchford West, Orford and Poplars & Hulme.
Labour leader Cllr Terry O’Neill said he was delighted with the overall results, putting the strong turn out for UKIP down to a “protest vote.”
