Don't bottle it up, says MP

WARRINGTON North MP Helen Jones is calling on people to ‘open up’ and talk rather than bottling things up if they are concerned about memory loss and dementia.
Less than half those suffering from dementia receive a diagnosis and therefore miss out on help.
The MP is supporting Dementia Awareness Week which runs from 18 – 24 May. 800,000 people are currently living with dementia. One in three people over the age of 65 will develop dementia.
Helen Jones said: “I have seen first hand the devastating impact the condition has, not only on the person with dementia but their families, friends and carers too. The fact that there are more and more people in Warrington who are living with dementia puts into perspective why there is a duty on us all to act.
“Half those with dementia have not been to a doctor and therefore cannot access any support services. Many are afraid to ask their doctor for a diagnosis. They may feel scared, confused or even ashamed. But the sooner they know what they’re dealing with, the sooner they can get on with their life and feel in control again.
“The Alzheimer’s Society, which runs Dementia Awareness Week, is encouraging people to talk to their doctor, their family or the Alzheimer’s Society if they are worried about their memory, or that of a loved one. So, please don’t bottle it up.”
