Change of use for landmark pub

A LANDMARK pub – listed as a building of local importance – is to be converted for residential use following a successful planning application by hotel and leisure group De Vere.
The former Ship Inn, in Chester Road, Walton, and its outbuildings, will be converted into three residential units as part of a wider scheme involving construction of 11 houses on a 1.25 hectare site.
It will be a second change of use for the century-old pub which, in recent years, has been used as an Indian restaurant.
An adjoining wooded area will be retained to retain a wildlife corridor, but it will be the end of the line for a nursery which operates from land towards the rear of the site.
Walton Parish Council and nearby residents objected to the scheme on the grounds the access to the site from the A56 Chester Road was unsuitable and could be hazardous. There were also concerns about a damaging impact on the Green Belt – and residents recalled that a similar scheme involving 15 houses was thrown out some years ago.
But planning officers recommended approval because the scheme would enable the existing less-than-ideal access to the site to be improved. The locally listed building would be retained as there are no plans to physically alter its exterior appearance.
The applicant has offered £150,000 towards the cost of off-site affordable housing and £10,000 towards the provision of off-site open space and recreation facilities as well as funding for road safety and traffic regulation works.
