Deaf awareness week

THE council is supporting national Deaf Awareness Week, from Monday 19 – Sunday 25 May, and promoting the local hearing loss services on offer.
The council’s sensory and telecare team work alongside partners at the Warrington Deaf Centre to provide lots of equipment, services and support to the local deaf community.
The centre, on Wilson Patten Street, has an equipment display area, a regular social club and Deaf History resources amongst other things.
The Warrington British Sign Language ‘signing choir’ is also helping to promote the week and will be performing at Lymm cross on Saturday 31 May and then with Rod Stewart at Blackpool Football ground on 20 June!
Over 40 people from organisations across Warrington recently came together for a British Sign Language Charter Day and pledged to:
· Ensure access for deaf people to information and services
· Promote learning and high quality teaching of British Sign Language (BSL)
· Support deaf children and families
· Ensure staff working with deaf people can communicate in BSL
· Consult with the community on a regular basis
Steve Reddy, operational director for adult services at the council, said: “This week gives us an opportunity to celebrate some of the excellent partnership working that has been ongoing over the last year but also to promote what’s on offer for our local deaf community.
“Services to support people with hearing loss in Warrington have continued to go from strength to strength and the Deaf Centre is now a busy and vibrant hub and home to a wide range of organisations all promoting hearing loss services.
“We’re now going to work to the five pledges and have lots of exciting things in the pipeline so we can continue to provide a great service to the deaf community and build on that success. The sensory team are also in the early planning stages of linking to Manchester University to assist in the research and service delivery of supporting people who are deaf and have dementia.”
