MPs 'Money Lessons' plan for local schools

WARRINGTON North MP Helen Jones is encouraging local schools to put on money lessons this June, to give pupils a head-start in financial education.
It becomes a compulsory part of the new National Curriculum in September, and now every primary and secondary school in Warrington North is being given the chance to take part in My Money Week, running from June 9-15, which aims to help young people learn more about money and personal finance.
Run by the national financial education charity, Personal Finance Education Group (PFEG), it will be themed around current affairs, challenging young people to improve their financial skills, knowledge and confidence through topical lessons and activities.
Helen Jones said: “I think this is a good idea and will be asking all the schools in Warrington North to take part in My Money Week. Since the first My Money Week, five years ago, millions of young people have been helped to understand more about money and personal finance through fun, but focused, activities in schools.”
Teachers will be offered free online resources, advice and training to help plan their activities.
Financial education will become compulsory after years of campaigning by MPs and Peers in the All Party Parliamentary Group on Financial Education for Young People, PFEG and others.
The move only affects secondary schools still under local authority control, but initiatives such as My Money Week are designed to get all schools involved, including primary schools, academies and free schools.
Schools and other organisations that work with young people in Warrington North can find out more about My Money week at www.pfeg.org/mymoneyweek
