Charity abseil at the Collegiate

MORE than 60 staff and students at Warrington Collegiate raised money for the Walton Lea Project with a charity abseil.
The abseil, which took place in hourly slots throughout the day, drew in large crowds who cheered participants as they made their way down the eighty feet between the rooftop of the college building and ground level.
Betsy Davies, studying Access to Higher Education, said: “It was so much fun and the views across the Warrington skyline were amazing from the top. The hardest bit was making yourself step over the edge knowing that it was just ropes holding you up, but once you got going, it was really exciting.”
The equipment, expertise and support on the day were supplied by Phil Worgan of Building Futures from Penkford School in St Helens.
Shirley Hallett, Examinations and Registry Manager said: “Given that I’m not the greatest fan of heights, it was a mental challenge as well as a physical one for me Walking backwards off the college roof was scary but it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity. I’m so proud of myself for doing it.”
The students have had the support of O2 Think Big, a project, which helps young people launch ideas and programmes that benefit the community where they live. Donna Plumbley, Co-Chair of O2 Think Big, who will be there on the day, said: “It’s fantastic to see young people getting involved in activities that take them outside their comfort zones and achieve something really worthwhile. I think this is a great idea and I’m really looking forward to an inspiring day.”
