St Gregory's on road to recovery

WARRINGTON’S St Gregory’s RC High School – slammed as a failing school only in February – is already well on the road to recovery.
A new monitoring report carried out by education watchdog Ofsted speaks very favourably of the new governance regime at the school
The inspector’s report makes it clear the new temporary governing body at the school is made up of people who are highly experienced in school improvement, safeguarding and finance.
It also states that the school’s improvement plan and the borough council’s statement of action are “fit for purpose.”
Sarah Callaghan, the borough council’s operational director of children’s and young people’s services said: “They are clear about what the school needs to do to improve. The council is very pleased with the progress made so far by governors, senior leaders and staff.”
The report acknowledges that senior leaders at the school have produced a detailed improvement plan that focuses on what wasn’t good enough at the time of the inspection last December that led to the school being placed in special measures.
The school has been carefully analysing data and finding ways to improve teaching in order to speed-up the progress of underachieving groups of students.
Interim head teacher Andrew Dawson, whose previous school was rated outstanding, said he was pleased by the degree of support provided by the borough council.
Mr Dawson commented: “The council has ensured a lot of support for the school. We’ve had the benefit of two national leaders of education, one for vulnerable groups and behaviour, and one for teaching and learning. “We’ve had the support of subject leaders for science and the curriculum, a national leader for governance, a subject leader of education and a business manager from a local outstanding school.
“With all of this plus the support given to us by the Archdiocese of Liverpool and the hard work of staff and students I’m confident St Gregory’s will make rapid progress against the comprehensive action plans that have been put in place.”
The inspection was the first monitoring inspection since the school became subject to “special measures” following the inspection of December 3-4.
A new temporary governing body was constituted on February 28.
