MP's fury over UKIP trouser jibe

A FURIOUS Helen Jones MP has hit out over a top UKIP supporter’s view that women should not wear trousers.
The Warrington North MP (pictured) – who is also Shadow Home Office minister –has retaliated by declaring Friday as “Wear your trousers to work day.”
She said: “We won’t be told what to wear by a man who, judging by his comments, is still living in the 15th Century. Let’s make Friday ‘Wear Your Trousers to Work Day’. I’m wearing mine.
“A woman can wear whatever she wants to wear. It’s not for a man to dictate her choice of clothes.”
Demetri Marchessini, who is a major UKIP donor, expressed his distaste for women wearing trousers in his book “Women In Trousers: A Rear View.”
He wrote: “It pains me to see women looking terrible.
“Walk along any street and you see women using trousers like a uniform every single day. This is hostile behaviour.”
Ms Jones says it isn’t Marchessini’s only attack on women.
He has some alarming views on marital rape, she says.
Stating his belief that a husband can never rape his wife, Marchessini said: “Once a woman accepts, she accepts.”
It is also not the first time somebody with close links to UKIP has come under fire for their misogynistic views.
Last year, UKIP member and former UKIP MEP Godfrey Bloom launched a series of verbal attacks on women, including calling them “sluts”.
Sharing his outdated ideas on gender roles, Bloom said: “Most women can find the mustard in the pantry quicker than a man and most men can
reverse a car better than a woman”
He declared those women who can park a car well as “not the norm” and labeled feminists as “rather shrill, bored, middle class women of a certain physical genre.”
Ms Jones said: “UKIP are deplorable on all levels, but they seem to have it in for women in particular.
“UKIP’s sexism is coming over loud and clear in their policies. They say they will scrap statutory maternity leave for small businesses and cut maternity pay.
“Many people see Nigel Farage as a joke figure, but his party’s attitude to women is serious. UKIP’s sexism should not be tolerated. That’s why I’ve declared Friday ‘Wear Your Trousers to Work Day’.”
