Remember our World War 1 heroes

A CULCHETH parish councillor is embarking on a project to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the First World War – and is asking for help from the community.
Cllr Paul Campbell wants schools, community groups and individuals to take photographs or paint pictures with some link between the three local villages – Culcheth, Glazebury and Croft – and the anniversary.
The best 12 could then be put together as a calendar to be sold in aid of the Royal British Legion Poppy Day appeal.
Cllr Campbell said: “The memorial at Newchurch holds the names of 30 local men who paid the ultimate sacrifice – a big price to pay for what must have then been a small local community.
“Many of the names are still familiar local family names and I would hope to research these with a view to writing further about who they were and where they came from.
“As a proud member of the Culcheth branch of the Royal British Legion I believe we all have a need to keep the memory of these brave young men and women and in today’s world support them and their families wherever we can.”
Cllr Campbell said his late father served in the British Army during the 1950s in an Irish regiment.
When he moved to Culcheth he was surprised to find on the War Memorial at Newchurch the name of Lt Col Boardman, DSO, Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers – the same regiment his father served in years later.
“What a strange coincidence! I felt the fact I had come to live in Culcheth, a small village in England, was meant to be.”
Cllr Campbell said he was willing to organise the calendar idea and pull together photographs, etc.
