THE RFL has paid tribute to Warrington based Rugby League stalwart Hilary Steel MBE, who died earlier this week following her battle with cancer.
Hilary was hugely influential in all aspects of the Community Game in the North West and held a host of roles in the region; the most recent as Chair of the North West Youth League.
Her outstanding contribution to the game she loved, culminated in the recognition she received when awarded an MBE in 2009.
Over the last few years she played a critical role in the evolution of the Community Game and was a long serving member of both the RFL Youth and Junior Management Group and the RFL Community Game Regulatory Group. Her advice and knowledge as a most experienced administrator was invaluable.
Hilary was also involved with BARLA and a driving force behind the very successful Warrington District League. At a local level her contribution at the Rylands club was immense.
RFL Chief Executive Nigel Wood said: “Hilary Steel MBE will be sorely missed by the Rugby League community. Her contribution to the sport from a local to a national level was of the highest quality and over a period of many years.
“A most able, conscientious and respected administrator who always sought to reach the best solution for the sport to ensure that more young people played in a safe and enjoyable environment.
“Her MBE in recognition of her services to Rugby League was richly deserved.”
