A WARRINGTON woman has been named “Tradeswoman of the Year” in the annual Women in Construction awards.
Sharon Powers, a plumber with Golden Gates Housing Trust (GGHT), selected for the award from more than 250 applicants from across the UK.
She is one of only two women out of 170 maintenance operatives at the trust and she started with GGHT in 2008 as a temporary loft insulator.
Through hard work and determination she quickly secured a permanent position with the trust.
The winner was decided by a panel of expert judges, with the final result announced at a gala dinner attended by Sharon and members of GGHT’s property services team, at Lancashire County Cricket Ground.
Angela Perry, director of property services at GGHT attended the event and said: “We are so proud of Sharon for winning the award. It has given me great pleasure to see Sharon develop and achieve her ambitions and she is great asset to GGHT. She is an excellent worker and team player and this is the perfect reward for her hard work and determination.”
The events’ 10 award categories not only honour the most outstanding individuals but also the organisations providing the opportunities and skills to redress the gender balance in an otherwise male dominated industry.
The event also raised money on the night for the Construction Youth Trust.
