WARRINGTON Wolves and Scotland International fullback Matty Russell has agreed a four-year deal that will keep him at The Halliwell Jones Stadium until November 2017.
Russell, 20, joined the Wolves from NRL side the Gold Coast Titans ahead of the 2014 season. He had a delayed start to the campaign through injury but since making his debut away to London Broncos back in March he has made a notable impact in the side. He’s a real live wire on the pitch making a statement in his first start in the win against Huddersfield Giants.
He’s currently made six first-team appearances for the Wolves this year crossing for the one try to date. Russell came to the fore as a result of his performances in the Rugby League World Cup for Scotland and promises the same at club level for the seasons ahead.
Head of coaching and rugby Tony Smith said: “ I am delighted. I think Matty has shown – in the short time that he has been here – what he is capable of and there is a lot more to come. He’s still learning aspects of the game and has certainly been very valuable to the team with his performances so far. I look forward to working with him and having him at the club for some time to come.”
Russell added: “I’m really happy, first to start playing and then to be asked to have another two years extended onto my deal was great news. It’s really positive. I’ve spoken to Simon (Moran) and he’s wanting to bring all the youngsters through at Warrington and he’s got good ideas for the next few years.
This year I’m looking to cement my spot and keep up some good form and in the coming years I’d like to become a regular first-team player and make an impact in Super League and on the fans; maybe win a few trophies with Warrington as well.
“I felt settled here before I was even playing and now I’m playing I’m happy.”
