Big local initiative gives a boost

A NATIONAL initiative to enable people to make a difference in local communities is delivering benefits to residents of Latchford.
Big Local provides an opportunity to residents of 150 areas around the country to use at least £1 million to make a lasting, positive difference to communities – and the Latch Ford Big Local area is one of the 150,
A small grants scheme brings together local talent, ambitions, skills and energy from individuals, groups and organisations who want to make their own area a better place to live.
The Latch Ford Big Local area is part of Latchford East ward and the small grants scheme has brought benefits for some of the youngest and oldest residents.
The Elders Group, at St Margaret’s Community Hub, was one of the first to benefit.
Volunteer Margaret Isherwood said: “We’re using our small grant to make a big difference to local people. I felt there was a need in the local area for supplying comfort for lonely older people – something that would make them feel special, particularly on their birthdays when they might have no one to celebrate it with.”
Another group is the Silver Service Club, who meet at Westy Community Centre every Friday who used their grant to buy a large toaster and a microwave.
The “Messy Kids” group at St Margaret’s also received a grant to help with their activities which include painting, cutting and sticks and a sand pit.
