Warrington – a garden city

0

WARRINGTON is making a significant contribution to this year National Gardens Scheme – the nationwide initiative which enables householders to open their gardens to the public to raise money for charity.
Four gardens across the borough will be open – helping NGS in its bid to beat last year’s figure of more than £107,000 – plus money raised from the sale of teas, etc.
NGS is run by volunteers and, of course, the beautiful gardens which go on show are created and maintained by volunteers.
But their efforts are appreciated by many – with the result that the scheme is the biggest single donor to Macmillan, Marie Cure and Help the Hospices.
In Warrington, the gardens to open this year are:
Beechwood Cottage, Crouchley Lane, Lymm, home of Ian and Amber Webb. This is a two and-a-half-acre garden looking out over fields with a large lawn, herbaceous borders, formal walkway with rose arches, topiary garden and orchard. It will be open on Sunday June 29 from 11am to 5pm, admission £4 but children free. Home made teas will be available.
Dingle Farm, Dingle Lane, Appleton. Robert Bilton will open his three-year-old garden which has a large pond, wild flower garden, vegetable patch with chicken run and a wooded area. Admission is £3 with children free and the garden will be open on Saturdays and Sundays July 26 and 27, July 2, 3, and August 9 and 10, from 10am to 5pm.
Holly Mere, Radley Lane, Houghton Green. Angela and Graham Harrop’s half-acre garden will be open on Sunday June 8 and Sunday August 10 from 11am-5pm. There are extensive borders of herbaceous perennials, roses and grasses and a small kitchen garden. Adults £3.50, children free. Tea available.
Laskey Farm, Laskey Lane, Thelwall. Howard and Wendy Platt’s one acre garden is open on Saturday and Sunday, August 16 and 17 and also, for groups of 10-plus by appointment, during May to August. The garden is packed with late summer colour, including herbaceous borders, rose garden, interconnected pools for wildlife and a fish and terrapin pond.
