STUDENTS preparing to enter the job market learnt how to put their job-seeking skills to their best use during Careers Week at Warrington Collegiate.
Advice was given on a range of career choices, job interviews and job hunting, to help them gain a competitive edge in seeking work.
The college’s career adviser, Neil Thompson, said: “At a time of high youth unemployment there has never been a greater need for careers guidance to be promoted and celebrated in education. Careers Week is an ideal platform to advice and inspire our next generation as they enter the world of work.
“We need to ensure that young people have access to high quality impartial professional careers advice backed up by first-hand insights into the world of work.”
Wendy Rigby, from The O2 Work Experience Team, delivered interactive sessions on interview tips and techniques, and CV writing.
Forensics student, Steph Ashley, aged 20 from Woolston, said: “It really made me think about how important that first contact with the employer is, whether it’s your application, CV or as you walk into an interview. I can now make sure that my CV is now top quality and that I’m interview ready thanks to today’s session.”
Lucy Sumner, Director of JAMthinking and Sumners, and Business Enterprise Manager for the Peter Jones Enterprise Academy in Cheshire, ran a series of seminars on starting your own business.
Plumbing student, Alex Beech, aged 18 from Walton, said: “This week has given me the business knowledge and confidence to start planning my long term future.
“Setting up and running your own business, can be one of the most rewarding experiences you can have. I now feel ready to give it serious consideration after a few years working with established businesses.”
