Comfortable home win for Warrington Town

WARRINGTON Town got their promotion push back on track with a comfortable 3-0 home victory over Clitheroe.
Goals from Ben Wharton, Scott Metcalfe and Conor Roberts earned a much needed three points as Town look to consolidate their play-off position, and it was the type of performance that had got them in to title contention until their recent poor form.
It was only a second win in nine games for Shaun Reid’s men, a first home win since February 8th and revenge for the 1-0 defeat suffered in the reverse fixture at Clitheroe over the festive period.
Wharton had already wasted a golden opportunity before opening the scoring on 16 minutes. He raced on to a loose ball, through on goal, but fired over when he should have done better. Strike partner Shaun Tuck, making his full debut, did similar moments before, after creating space for himself in the box.
But it was second time lucky for Wharton, who shot from outside the box to the left of the goal, and the ball dipped under the crossbar, possibly via a deflection for 1-0.
Wharton seemed to thrive alongside Tuck, and he almost doubled the lead on the half hour mark after a determined run took him past a few defenders and inside the box, although the goalkeeper was able to close him down and make the stop.
Shortly after, Metcalfe added the second, chesting down and striking a left foot half-volley low past the goalkeeper.
It was game over within a minute of the second half, Warrington scoring virtually straight from the kick-off.
Wharton flicked on Louis Corrigan’s long ball, and Roberts took the ball on the run, his momentum taking him wide of the defence, and he finished superbly with his left foot in to the far corner.
The game petered out for the remaining 44 minutes, as Town recorded a comfortable victory.
The closest the visitors came to spoiling Josh Ollerenshaw’s clean sheet was when Simon Nangle hit a shot off the underside of the bar five minutes from time.
Town have four games left – Curzon (A, Sat 12th), Ramsbottom United (A, Sat 19th), Prescot Cables (H, Mon 21st), Harrogate Railway Athletic (A, Sat 26th) – and currently sit in third place and one of the four play-off spots.
