Pupils give up sweets for Lent

YEAR 8 pupils at Warrington’s Sir Thomas Boteler CE High School decided to give something up for Lent – and give the money they saved to charity.
They decided that instead of spending spare change on sweets and chocolate they would put in Smartie tubes and donate the money to Marie Curie Cancer Care.
Lewis Clark said: “When we were shown the Smartie tubes, I decided to give all my £10 because these are the amazing people who help my Mum.”
Shay Whittaker said: “My friend Taylor and I spent time in the Boiler Room (Boteler’s after school youth club) doing research on how the Marie Curie nurses help not only the cancer patients but also their relatives too.
“We have both learned a lot and we cannot wait to find out more about how people make sacrifices for the sake of others.”
Matthew Bennett said: “Doing this started to prepare us for thinking what we could do as individuals for our Archbishop of York Award in the summer term with the help of our Form Tutors. We can choose what we do as long as it is helping others and making a difference .
“ We will finish off our fund-raising activity in our own time in the summer holidays and then we get a special assembly in October to recognise our achievements.”
The pupils learned about the account of Jesus’ temptations in the desert, as told in the three gospels, Matthew, Mark and Luke and were asked to think about how their Christian beliefs about Lent might influence their own lives.
