Swing bridge eyesores slammed

WARRINGTON’S three rusting swing bridges are appalling eyesores and letting down the town, according to Liberal Democrat councillors.
They want the borough council to put pressure on Manchester Ship Canal owners Peel Ports to paint the three bridges.
Cllr Celia Jordan (pictured) said: “The bridges create a very poor visual impression of Warrington as they lie on the ‘gateways’ into the town.
“They are covered with rust and look awful. I am pleased the council has this topic on the agenda when they meet with Peel. I understand Peel claim it would cost between £300,000 and £500,000 a bridge to paint and they haven’t got the budget for it.
“There must be cheaper options, which could be considered. You have to wonder if they are spending enough on maintenance. Surely we haven’t got to wait until the structure rusts right through and a bridge falls into the water before they take some action!”
